Adaptive responses of animals to climate change are most likely insufficient

Biological responses to climate change have been widely documented across taxa and regions, but it remains unclear whether species are maintaining a good match between phenotype and environment, i.e. whether observed trait changes are adaptive. Here we reviewed 10,090 abstracts and extracted data from 71 studies reported in 58 relevant publications, to assess quantitatively whether phenotypic trait changes associated with climate change are adaptive in animals. A meta-analysis focussing on birds, the taxon best represented in our dataset, suggests that global warming has not systematically affected morphological traits, but has advanced phenological traits. We demonstrate that these advances are adaptive for some species, but imperfect as evidenced by the observed consistent selection for earlier timing. Application of a theoretical model indicates that the evolutionary load imposed by incomplete adaptive responses to ongoing climate change may already be threatening the persistence of species. © 2019, The Author(s)

Discutindo a educação ambiental no cotidiano escolar: desenvolvimento de projetos na escola formação inicial e continuada de professores

A presente pesquisa buscou discutir como a Educação Ambiental (EA) vem sendo trabalhada, no Ensino Fundamental e como os docentes desta escola compreendem e vem inserindo a EA no cotidiano escolar., em uma escola estadual do município de Tangará da Serra/MT, Brasil. Para tanto, realizou-se entrevistas com os professores que fazem parte de um projeto interdisciplinar de EA na escola pesquisada. Verificou-se que o projeto da escola não vem conseguindo alcançar os objetivos propostos por: desconhecimento do mesmo, pelos professores; formação deficiente dos professores, não entendimento da EA como processo de ensino-aprendizagem, falta de recursos didáticos, planejamento inadequado das atividades. A partir dessa constatação, procurou-se debater a impossibilidade de tratar do tema fora do trabalho interdisciplinar, bem como, e principalmente, a importância de um estudo mais aprofundado de EA, vinculando teoria e prática, tanto na formação docente, como em projetos escolares, a fim de fugir do tradicional vínculo “EA e ecologia, lixo e horta”.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació

Simulation und Auswertung der Energieversorgung eines geplanten Mehrfamilienhauses

Für die IBA (internationale Bauausstellung) im Jahr 2013 sind in Wilhelmsburg Mitte, in Hamburg, mehrere neue Wohngebäude geplant, welche sich im Park der internationalen Gartenschau IGS befinden. Jedes Wohnungsbaumodell liefert seine eigene Innovation auf die Frage des zukünftigen Wohnungsbaus im 21. Jahrhundert. Bei einem dieser Wohnungsbaumodelle wird die technische Gebäudeausrüstung (TGA) durch das Ingenieurbüro Pinck Ingenieure Consulting GmbH geplant. Hierbei handelt es sich um das Projekt „Smart ist grün“, ein Passivhaus, welches auch als Plusenergiehaus bei der dena (Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH) nominiert ist [IBA12]. Es werden im und am Gebäude neue Innovationen und erneuerbare Energien berücksichtigt. Dieses sind zum Einen ein PCM-Wärmespeicher (Phase Change Material) sowie eine Photovoltaikanlage an der Balkonbrüstung und eine Solarthermieanlage auf dem Flachdach und an der Attika. Ferner ist ein Anschluss an das Nahwärmenetz zur Einspeisung und auch zur Rückspeisung von Wärmeenergie vorgesehen. Somit ist, unabhängig der erneuerbaren Energien, eine Versorgung von Wärme- und elektrischer Energie sicher gestellt. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt die dynamische Simulation dieser Energiever- sorgung. Die, während der Planung, durchgeführte Anlagensimulation dient zum Nachweis und zur Überprüfung der geltenden Randbedingungen. Für das Erstellen des Anlagenschemas sind Kenntnisse bezüglich der eingesetzten Innovationen notwendig. Daher werden hierzu zunächst die technischen Details in den nächsten zwei Kapiteln erläutert. Vor der Simulation wird eine geeignete Software ausgewählt. Weiterhin werden für die Simulation geltende Randbedingungen und Anforderungen dokumentiert. Auf Grundlage des aktuellen Anlagenschemas der Wärmeversorgung des TGA- Planungsbüros Pinck Ingenieure Consulting GmbH wird im Hauptteil die Erstellung des Anlagenschemas dokumentiert. Unterteilt wird dieses Kapitel, wie auch die darauffolgende Auswertung, zum Einen in die Wärmeversorgung und zum Anderen in die Stromversorgung. Anschließend wird ein Vergleich zwischen der Planungsgrundlage und der Umsetzung in der Software vorgenommen. Es werden die Annahmen und Änderungen in der Software noch einmal zusammengefasst. Weiterhin werden Optimierungsmöglichkeiten der einzelnen Komponenten, wie beispielsweise der Solarthermieanlage, aufgezeigt. Im Anhang ist die grundlegende Basis der Simulation, das Anlagenschema von Pinck Ingenieure, aufgezeigt. Im Vergleich hierzu ebenso das Anlagenschema aus der Simulationssoftware. Abschließend ist der, durch das Programm erstellte, ausführliche Bericht mit den Simulationsergebnissen angehängt

Impact of Life History on Fear Memory and Extinction

Behavioral profiles are strongly shaped by an individual’s whole life experience. The accumulation of negative experiences over lifetime is thought to promote anxiety-like behavior in adulthood (‘allostatic load hypothesis’). In contrast, the ‘mismatch hypothesis’ of psychiatric disease suggests that high levels of anxiety-like behavior are the result of a discrepancy between early and late environment. The aim of the present study was to investigate how different life histories shape the expression of anxiety-like behavior and modulate fear memory. In addition, we aimed to clarify which of the two hypotheses can better explain the modulation of anxiety and fear. For this purpose, male mice grew up under either adverse or beneficial conditions during early phase of life. In adulthood they were further subdivided in groups that either matched or mismatched the condition experienced before, resulting in four different life histories. The main results were: (i) Early life benefit followed by late life adversity caused decreased levels of anxiety-like behavior. (ii) Accumulation of adversity throughout life history led to impaired fear extinction learning. Late life adversity as compared to late life benefit mainly affected extinction training, while early life adversity as compared to early life benefit interfered with extinction recall. Concerning anxiety-like behavior, the results do neither support the allostatic load nor the mismatch hypothesis, but rather indicate an anxiolytic effect of a mismatched early beneficial and later adverse life history. In contrast, fear memory was strongly affected by the accumulation of adverse experiences over the lifetime, therefore supporting allostatic load hypothesis. In summary, this study highlights that anxiety-like behavior and fear memory are differently affected by specific combinations of adverse or beneficial events experienced throughout life
